How to Get Dark Matter in FF X

Obtaining Dark Matter in "Final Fantasy X" ("FFX") is a time-consuming chore, but the end result is well worth the effort. Dark Matter serves a variety of purposes in the game, from breaking your characters' damage limits to creating the invaluable Ribbon. You can get 99 Dark Matters as a prize for unlocking the Ultima Buster fiend in the Monster Arena. Once you've done that, you can maintain your supply of Dark Matters by returning to the arena and battling your new creations.

  Head to the Calm Lands and exit east to find the Monster Arena. Speak with the trainer there and purchase some monster-capturing weapons for your characters. Defeating an enemy with these weapons will add it to your collection at the arena.

  Equip the new weapons to your characters and begin fighting random battles in each area. Collect at least five of every enemy to unlock the Ultima Buster. Visit Besaid, Mi'ihen Highroad, Djose Road, Macalania, Calm Lands, Mt. Gagazet, Omega Dungeon, Kilika, Mushroom Rock Road, Thunder Plains, Bikanel, Sunken Cave and Inside Sin to locate them all. Speak with the trainer to monitor your progress and determine how many additional fiends you need from each area.

  Return to the Monster Arena after you've collected five of every fiend. Speak with the trainer to unlock Ultima Buster and receive your prize of 99 Dark Matters. Collect additional Dark Matters by fighting Ultima Buster or any of the other fiends under the "Area Conquest," "Species Conquest" or "Original" categories in the Monster Arena menu.
