PS2 GTA Games

Although each "Grand Theft Auto" (GTA) game for the PlayStation 2 (PS2) features a unique storyline set in one of three cities, the games have a lot in common. The biggest common feature in each GTA title is the mission-based game-play. Each game also earned a "Mature" content rating for violent and sexual content. Before the series transferred to the next-generation console, the PlayStation 3, Rockstar Games released five GTA titles on the PS2.
  1. "Grand Theft Auto III"

    • Previous titles in the "Grand Theft Auto" series used a top-down perspective that kept players at a distance from game-play. With "Grand Theft Auto III," players saw the game undergo a makeover into a sandbox-style game where players could explore their surroundings on a whole new level. The game takes place in Liberty City, Rockstar's rendition of New York City. The object is to complete a large list of missions as the storyline progresses. These missions range from simple delivery tasks to large-scale shootouts.

    "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City"

    • This follow-up to "III" took a step back in time to the 1980s. New additions to the game include motorcycles, aircrafts and property missions. The main character, Tommy Vercetti, is working diligently to establish himself as the kingpin of Vice City. To unlock missions, you must purchase properties -- an ice cream factory and film studio, for example. Fans of '80s music will love the game's soundtrack, which features hits from '80s artists like Quiet Riot and Michael Jackson.

    "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas"

    • The crime-based series continued its expansion with the 2004 release of "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas." Playing as CJ, you must complete missions that help defend your "turf" from rival gangs. "San Andreas" marked the introduction of girlfriends, an element which carried over into "Grand Theft Auto IV." In order to attract girls, CJ must maintain fat and muscle levels. Mini-games like pool and arcade games round out the list of multiple additions found in this installment in the series.

"Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories"

    • "Liberty City Stories" returns to the fictional location of "Grand Theft Auto III." The game originally debuted on the Sony PlayStation Portable, but Rockstar ported the title to PS2 in 2005. "Liberty City Stories" serves as a sequel to "III," and follows the story of Tony Cipriani, a man with mafia ties. The game does not introduce any new elements, but provides additional familiar gameplay. Players can complete missions and partake in side jobs like taxi cab and pizza delivery missions.

"Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories"

    • Before "Grand Theft Auto" took the leap to the PlayStation 3 console, Rockstar released "Vice City Stories." The game saw the return of the 1980s rendition of Vice City. In addition to the standard mission-style game-play, players must complete side missions to build an empire. The side missions work similarly to the turf wars in "San Andreas," where players must attack enemy businesses to force them to close down. This final GTA PS2 title combines multiple elements of all previous "Grand Theft Auto" games.
