How to Softmod a Slimline PS2

A PlayStation 2 slimline model ("PS2 Slim") is a compact version of Sony's second-generation video game console. You can modify the operating system of the PS2 Slim in order for it to play copies of your legally owned discs; this is not something that the PS2 could otherwise do. The PS2 Slim can be altered by using a "soft" procedure and does not require any soldering of its components. Computer supplies are required to "softmod" the PS2 Slim.

Instructions

    • 1

Download a free PS2 modification program file such as the "MC Boot" from a PS2 enthusiast website. Click on the file on the desktop when the download is complete. Plug a USB flash drive into a USB controller socket on the computer. Close the "Add hardware" window when it appears by clicking the red "X" in its upper-right corner.

    • 2

Click "Start," followed by "Computer." Click on the icon of the USB flash drive that is in the left column of the window that appears on the screen. Drag the downloaded file from the desktop into the right side of the window. Let the copy window appear and then disappear before continuing.

    • 3

Right-click on the drive's icon. Select "Eject" from the pop-up menu. Close the window by clicking the red "X' in the upper-right corner. Remove the USB flash drive from the computer's USB socket.

    • 4

Insert the USB flash drive into one of the PS2 Slim's controller sockets. Raise the console's lid. Tear a piece of construction paper in half and then in half again. Twirl a piece of the paper between your fingers to form a point at one end. Push the point into the hole in the inside front-edge of the console, where the latch is located. Push down on the paper until there is a clicking sound.

Turn on the PS2 Slim. Move across the menu screen, using the controller's direction pad. Select the "Video" icon, followed by "Media Player." Press the controller's "X" button. Press "Right" on the direction pad to select the USB flash drive. Press the "X" button.

Press the "X" button when prompted, so that the software can modify the PS2 Slim. Shut off the PS2 when a confirmation window appears on the screen. Remove the paper from the inside of the PS2 Slim. Remove the USB flash drive from its front. Close the lid.
