How to Get Past the Song in Xenosaga

Released in February 2003, "Xenosaga" by Monolith Soft, Monolith Namco at the time, was a space-opera that had just about everything the genre calls for, such as hostile aliens, transforming mecha, big spaceships, and quite a few unique character concepts. Among the ships, perhaps the most unique, and outright strange, was the Song of Nephilim, an inverted pyramid that was made to house Lemegeton, a program said to have been derived from the Voice of God. The Song of Nephilim becomes a dungeon late in the game, with several exclusive and irritating puzzles whose solutions aren't immediately apparent.

Instructions

  1. First Tower

    • 1

Enter the Song of Nephilim and make your way to the first room. The puzzle here involves boxes arranged around a switch. Destroying boxes in values of 3 will activate the elevator, and leaving the room resets the boxes. Single boxes are worth 1, doubles 2, and there are one apiece worth 3 and 4.

    • 2

Destroy 6 boxes to reach the third floor. The southwest exit of this room leads to a switch. Press it to extend the bridge to the next tower. You can also get a Med Kit DX in the main room of this floor. Return to the elevator room through the slide exit.

    • 3

Destroy 12 points' worth of boxes to reach the fifth floor, which contains Decoder 14. Return to the elevator room.

    • 4

Destroy 15 points' worth to reach the sixth floor, which contains a Neo Armor Alpha and the exit to the second tower. The second and fourth floors are largely empty, but they contain enemies if you wish to fight them.

    Second Tower

    • 5

Switch your avatar to Momo, and take the northeast exit. Investigate the shining dot on the wall to receive another tech attack and ether for Momo. Switch back to your normal avatar and return to the Save Point.

    • 6

Take the north exit and destroy the tube to get Cross, a new gun for Junior. Return to the Save Point and take the northwest exit. Climb down the first ladder and up the next ladder, then destroy the object to receive a Soldier's Honor.

    • 7

Climb down the ladder and travel east. Take the first ladder down and then travel west. Skip the first ladder down and take the second one up instead. Destroy the boxes here to receive Defibrillator Vest and Neo Armor Beta, plus a boss fight that requires Physical type attacks as the boss will become immune to all other attack types after the first time they're used. Defeating this boss wins you Decoder 2 and access to Segment Address .

    • 8

Go back down the ladder, backtracking to the one you bypassed previously. Go down that ladder, travel east and take the first south path. Press the button that lowers the walkway to this level.

    • 9

Travel forward and turn right, entering the next door. Destroy the cylinder on the left and then the one on the right to summon the boss of this tower, Rainon Se. Make your preparations to face the boss, then run into it to start the battle. Steal Shield Armor using Junior's Psycho Pocket and keep everyone healed. This boss uses an ether that seals your ability to Boost. The "Cure-All" item heals this status, but it isn't necessary.

    • 10

Use Tech attacks and normal hits to finish the boss, then press the button outside. At the end of this path is an elevator up. Take it and make your way to the third tower.

    Third Tower: Puzzle 1

    • 11

Take the west exit from the room with the triangular hole in the floor. Climb down the ladder one level and destroy blocks until the bridge can be crossed. Take the Field Ring from the cylinder, go back to the ladder and climb all the way to the bottom.

    • 12

Destroy enough blocks to bring the bridge down to this level, then destroy the blocks under the second bridge to bring it to this level as well. Cross the bridge, grab the Ether Pack DX, go back across the bridge and exit south to reset the blocks.

    • 13

Go back into the bridge room, climb the ladder up and go west, bring the bridge to this level, cross and go up. Destroy the object to obtain Skill Upgrade S, then drop down the hole in the floor to receive an Ether Pack DX.

    • 14

Destroy the door for a Med Kit and then destroy the object blocking the ladder. Grab Decoder 17 from the chest on the right before descending the ladder, then exit to the west.

    Third Tower: Puzzle 2

    • 15

Exit west and listen to the sounds made by the device here. The solution to this puzzle relies on these sounds, so make sure your volume is turned up so that you can hear them. Go back east to the puzzle room.

    • 16

Destroy 3 blue, 1 green, and 4 red objects to duplicate the tones. Exit south and press the button, pass through the nearby door and ride the triangular elevator up.

    • 17

Take the northeast exit to the previous tower, save your game, and return to the third tower. There are three bosses coming up.

    • 18

From the triangular elevator room, head southwest, then east. Approach the lights and take the elevator down. Take the north door for a cut-scene and a boss fight against Simeon, Albedo's mech. Conserve all your attacks until after Simeon uses Aird E on a single target. This single target will be the one the camera focuses on when Albedo says, "You're all so frail!" Defend with this character before Simeon uses Aird E. Now cut loose with all your Ether-based techs as Simeon loses all Ether Defense after using Aird E. Try to avoid letting Simeon's turn land on the Crit+ attack slot by using Boost. This is primarily a defensive battle. Toward the end, Simeon will Boost regularly. Use your own Boosts to finish the fight.

    • 19

Do not speak with the cloaked person left behind after this fight. Return to the Save Point, heal, save your game, and then return to the room. Speaking with the cloaked figure starts a second boss battle. Steal from the first form, Ein Rugel, until you receive an item, then blast away with Ether-based attacks. Ein Rugel is annoying because it uses Status attacks. Make sure to cure all of these before defeating the first form. The second form, Doppelwogel, has extremely high defense. Tech attacks that aren't leveled into double digits won't have much effect. This boss uses Confusion attacks. Make sure to equip abilities or items that nullify the Confusion status before speaking to the cloaked figure. Just like the battle with Simeon, this is a defensive fight.
