The Difference Between a Black and Silver PS2 Slimline

Over the 10 years of its life cycle, Sony's PlayStation 2 (PS2) gaming console underwent many design changes. Beginning as a large, blocky box, the last PS2s were streamlined into low, flat boxes. As part of the Slimline series of PS2s, Sony released a silver edition only weeks before the PlayStation 3 as a limited version along with a white version and the typical black.
  1. Appearance

    • The major difference between the two is also the most notable: the color. Obviously the black Slimline PS2 is black, and the silver is silver. Beginning with its first, larger models, most PlayStation 2s come in black. Silver was introduced for gamers who wanted a different color either to better match their home decor or to be viewed as a more prestigious item. Beyond color, the two are identical in appearance.

    Performance

    • While some customers claim that the silver Slimline PS2 runs quieter than the black, the two models' are technically identical. Each has the same specifications, speed, power and limitations as other, recent PlayStation 2 consoles. However the software used on the silver models differed slightly from those of the black causing compatibility issues with nine specific games, including "Tekken 5" and "Hitman: Contracts."

    Availability

    • The other major difference in the two models is that the silver PS2, like the white version, was introduced as a limited edition model, making it more difficult to acquire. As part of Sony's commitment to supporting the PlayStation 2 -- even as the PS3 was preparing to launch -- the company continued making new PS2 consoles, which included these limited editions. The rarity of silver PS2s make them a bit of a collector's item. As of May 2011, it is much easier to purchase a black Slimline PS2 than a silver one.

    Price

    • As with other limited edition items, many consumers were eager to purchase the silver PS2 upon its release. Its popularity led retailers to raise the price of the silver model, using both its limited release and consumer demand to justify the extra expense.
