Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30
"Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30" is a WWII-themed first-person shooter that puts you in the shoes of Sgt. Matt Baker, who actually was a real-life member of the 101st Airborne Division of the U.S. Army. The game begins on the eve of D-Day, when you and your companions are dropped behind enemy lines and are charged with infiltrating far into enemy-held territory as the vanguard of the Allied invasion. "Brothers in Arms" possesses 17 chapters offering a balance of action-packed set pieces and less-intense atmospheric sections. It also includes a multiplayer mode that offers a more tight, mission-based structure compared to many of its competitors.
Call of Duty 3
In "Call of Duty 3," a first-person shooter developed by Treyarch, the player takes part in the Normandy Breakout -- the Allied invasion of Brittany that took place between June and August 1944. During the course of the game's 14 missions, players fight with the American, British, Canadian and Polish forces against the German Nazi forces. The game employs the classic "Call of Duty" gameplay style but introduces new quick-time cut-scene events, where players have to input a series of buttons to successfully carry out scripted events, such as an up-and-close tussle with a Nazi soldier. The game includes a 16-player multiplayer mode, where players can go head to head in Deathmatches, play Capture the Flag, undertake Team Battles and participate in War Modes.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Operation Resurrection
"Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Operation Resurrection" is a first-person shooter that takes place in an alternate universe in which the Nazis, through their search for mysterious powers, have awakened undead soldiers that threaten the living. The game puts you in the boots of B.J. Blazkowicz, a veteran of the Allied forces who is on a mission to stop the Nazis and undead soldiers. Eschewing the multiplayer feature, which made the PC and Xbox versions of the game so popular, the PS2 version of the game contains only a single-player campaign.
Battle Stations: Midway
"Battle Stations: Midway" is a naval battle game. You are given command of battleships, submarines, jet fighters and bombers in an all-out assault on the Japanese forces in the Pacific, from Pearl Harbor to the coasts of Japan itself. You can control the positioning of your forces and directly control each individual unit. In addition to the story campaign, the game also includes 12 Challenge Missions, which involve the player commanding a particular unit and completing various objectives, as well as a multiplayer mode that supports up to eight players in head-to-head matches.
Medal of Honor: European Assault
"Medal of Honor: European Assault" for the PS2 is a first-person shooter in which you take the role of William Holt, an American intelligence officer. During the campaign, Holt fights alongside the SAS in the assault upon St. Nazaire in France, joins General Montgomery and the Desert Rats in North Africa to repel Rommel's Afrikan Corps, fights alongside the Red Army in the Eastern Front, and finally rejoins the U.S. forces to participate in the Battle of the Bulge. The game possesses wide-open levels that encourage multiple approaches to enemy encounters, but the campaign is relatively brief. The game also lacks a multiplayer mode.
Heroes of the Pacific
"Heroes of the Pacific" is an aircraft-based combat game that takes place in the Pacific Theater. You play the role of Crowe, a pilot who gets caught up in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and goes on to participate in the major battles in the Pacific. Most of the planes you pilot are light and maneuverable craft, but you also get the opportunity to fly bombers and torpedo planes. The game has four difficulty levels and a four-player split-screen mode, but no online play.
World War II: Tank Battles
In "World War II: Tank Battles," you get the opportunity to pilot a range of powerful tanks while fighting with either the Allies or Germans. During the campaign, you fight across North Africa, participate in coastal assaults and charge ashore during the D-Day landing in Normandy. "World War II: Tank Battles" includes a variety of missions, including locating bases, tracking and destroying enemy tanks and protecting strategic positions. Success is rewarded with new weaponry, armor and other upgrades.
