How to Fix a Stuck Button on a PS2 Controller

Everything from food and drink spills, to simple wear and tear from years of use, can cause your PlayStation 2 control buttons to stick. You have the choice of either buying a new controller, or trying to fix the buttons on your own. You will have to take your controller apart if cleaning it does not work. Make sure that with all the steps, the controller is unplugged from the console.

Instructions

  1. Cleaning

    • 1

Clean the controller. Use a washcloth, along with warm water and soap, to gently wipe down the buttons. This may dislodge any material that has filled up the space between the button and the controller.

    • 2

Take tweezers or a pin to clean out the crevices between the button and controller. Left-over dirt might still be blocking the button from being able to fully descend and ascend into its crevice. Avoid toothpicks, as the wood can snap and lodge in the controller.

    • 3

Dismantle the controller if you feel you are able to put it back together. Turn controller upside down, and remove six screws with Phillips screwdriver. Place finger on both analog sticks, and the front piece will pop off.

    • 4

Clean each button individually. Take the cloth, with soapy warm water, and wipe down each one, using a q-tip to clean out the grooves of the button. Use tweezers once again to pick off any excess material left over from the cleaning. Dry the buttons before putting them back into place.

    • 5

Put all the pieces together in the correct order. Place the front piece back onto the controller, and turn the screws back into place. Watch the video enclosed in the reference guide if you forget which button goes where.
