How to Play a First Generation PS2 on HDTV

The PlayStation 2 was released in 2001 in the United States, a few years before HDTV took off among consumers. It has a standard resolution of 480i (interlaced), which is the resolution of every standard definition television. However, some PS2 games display at 480p (progressive), which is a cleaner and sharper image. Even fewer games, such as "God of War 2" and "Gran Turismo 4," have special widescreen, HDTV-compatible modes and resolutions.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the S-video or component cable to the HDTV. The majority of HDTVs require you to switch to the system on the display by pressing "Input," but some switch automatically when you turn the system on.

    • 2

Turn on the system and hold down "Triangle" and "X." This method works for games that do not have an option to switch to "Progressive" in the Options menu.

    • 3

Select "Screen" from the Options menu on your HDTV to change the aspect ratio of the display so that the 4:3 PS2 image can fill the 16:9 HDTV screen. Many TVs automatically do this or add it to a single button on the remote, such as "Zoom."
