Reasons for a PS3 With No Power

Your PlayStation 3 provides plenty of entertainment options such as Netflix movies, gaming, PlayStation Network content and DVD and Blu-ray playback. If your PS3 suddenly stops responding and apparently has no power, all of those become unavailable. There are a few common causes of a power failure, and you should check on them to see if you can get your PS3 working again.
  1. Power Cord

    • The electrical cord to the PS3 can be removed, and the cord may become loose and fail to make a secure connection with the unit. Fixing this problem is fairly simple: You just need to securely insert the cord into the connector in the back of the console. The cord can slide in and out without much trouble. You should also check to make sure the cord is plugged into the wall; if it's fallen out of the receptacle or even fallen loose, the PS3 may have no power. You should also check the cord to see if it's damaged in any way. If you see cuts into the cord or any fraying, you should use extreme caution around the cord and get it replaced as soon as possible. Do not use the PS3 until you replace its power cord.

    Electrical Outlet

    • Another possibility is that the outlet itself has no electrical power. You can test this by unplugging the PS3 and plugging another device into the outlet, such as a radio or a lamp. If that device doesn't power on, then the problem is with the outlet. The breaker may have tripped, or you may need to get an electrician to evaluate the situation.

    Overheating

    • If the PS3's indicator light is flashing red, the console most likely overheated when it was on, and it must cool off sufficiently before you can power it back up. The console actually does have power but it won't work again until it's cooled down. You should ensure that the PS3 is not in a restrictive location where its ventilation is hindered, and you may need to clean the vents with a vacuum. Do not use compressed air to clean the vents, since you could blow dust into the PS3 and damage it.

    "Yellow Light of Death"

    • On rare occasions PS3 consoles will experience what many users call the "yellow light of death." Your system is experiencing a serious fault or error if the indicator light is yellow or if it flashes in this order: green, yellow, green then red, with red continuing to blink. If your PS3 is covered by a warranty, you can contact the retailer you bought it from or Sony to see if someone can repair or replace your console. Many websites offer do-it-yourself fixes for this issue, but you use those methods at your own risk, since you could cause further damage to your PS3. Also keep in mind that if your console is under warranty and you open it up to work on it, you will void your warranty.
