How to Fix a Lagging PlayStation 3 Network

The PlayStation 3 is a home console form Sony Computer Entertainment, released in the fall of 2006. It features robust online community features in order to support online multi-player mode in a large number of PS3 titles. As with any multi-player games, PS3 titles are subject to packet loss, a network latency event in which small amounts of information are lost during the streaming of large amounts of data across a network. This can be mitigated to a certain degree on the client side -- in this case, the network to which your PS3 is attached.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect your PS3 directly to your router with an Ethernet cable. Wireless Internet is much slower than wired Internet, especially since most PS3 models only have Wireless G, rather than the much faster Wireless N.

    • 2

Access your router or software firewall and forward common ports to ensure that your router isn't blocking access to ports used to play PS3 multi-player games:

      TCP Ports: 80, 443, 5223 and 10070 - 10080
      UDP Ports: 3478, 3479, 3658, 10070 and 50100

Give your PS3 a static IP address and place this IP address in your router's DMZ. This ensures that your PS3 not only has a direct pipeline to the Internet due to the elimination of as much software and hardware overhead as possible, but that it is unhindered by any security features enabled by default.
