How to Install a Rapid Fire Mod on PS3

Many games for the PlayStation 3 require players to rapidly hit a button, either to shoot a weapon or pass a quick time event. Game modders have developed the rapid fire modification as a shortcut around this in-game requirement. This mod causes the controller to register button tapping at a rate that is faster than humanly possible. Disassembling a PlayStation 3 controller to complete the rapid fire modification can give any gamer a dramatic edge in competitive play.

Things You'll Need

  • Rapid fire mod hardware kit
  • Soldering iron
  • Small Phillips screwdriver
  • 5/32" drill bit and drill
  • Wire cutters
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the batteries from the PlayStation 3 controller or unplug it from the console.

    • 2

Unscrew the five screws on the back of the PlayStation 3 controller.

    • 3

Drill a hole into the side of the controller where the base of your left thumb rests against the intersection of the handle and the central part of the controller.

    • 4

Identify the model number of the controller by reading the fine print on the back of the controller or referring to the device's documentation. If your controller is version 1, do Step 5 and then skip to Step 8. If your controller is version 2, then do Step 6 and then skip to Step 7. If your controller is a SIXAXIS device, do Step 7 and then skip to Step 8.

    • 5

Solder the red wire to the third module at the lower left portion of the hardware. Solder the green wire the uppermost module on the left. Solder the outer blue wire to the module listed as "TP18" and the inner blue wire to one of the modules to the right of "C9." The module closer to "C9" links rapid fire to the "R1" button, whereas the second module links it to the "R2" button on the controller.

    • 6

Solder the red wire to the third module at the lower left portion of the hardware. Solder the green wire to the uppermost module on the left. Solder the outer blue wire to the module listed as "TP18" and the inner blue wire to the upper module to the left of "TP17."

    • 7

Solder the green wire to the upper left module. Solder the red wire to the module labelled "TP43." Solder the outer blue wire to the module labelled "TP18" and the inner blue wire to the module beneath "60" to link it to the "R1" button, or solder it to the second module beneath the "TP" in "TP17" to link it to the "R2" button.

    • 8

Glue the button connected to the two blue wires to the hole that you drilled into the side of the device.

    • 9

Glue all four wires to the small channel above the plastic wall guard. The channel is near the top of the device, next to the "R1" and "R2" buttons. One inch further down the wires, glue the wires to the plastic casing to avoid collision with the rumble device.

    • 10

Reassemble the controller by screwing the screws back into the holes. Return the batteries or plug the device back into the console. Press the button mounted in the drilled hole during gameplay to activate the rapid fire mod.
