What Cords Are Used to Hook a PS3 to an HDTV?

The PlayStation 3 has two output ports on it you can use to output audio and video from the PS3 to your HDTV: the "HDMI OUT" port and the "AV MULTI OUT" port. After connecting your power cable, Ethernet cable and any other devices to your PS3, use these ports to connect the cable you will use to run the audio and video from your PS3 to your HDTV.
  1. HDMI

    • Unlike other cables used to connect the PS3 to an HDTV, you must plug one end of the HDMI cable to the "HDMI OUT" port on the back of the PS3 instead of the "AV MULTI OUT" port. Also, unlike other PS3 audio/video cables, HDMI cables used in conjunction with a PS3 do not need to be a PS3-specific type of cable; you can use any HDMI cable. Connect the other end of the cable to an available HDMI input, typically labelled "HDMI." HDMI inputs carry high-definition audio and video. Supported output video modes for HDMI include 1080i, 1080p, 720p or 480p.

    Component

    • Component cables carry high-definition video but not audio. Connect the end of the PS3 component component cable with a single connector into the "AV MULTI OUT" port on the back of the PS3. Connect the end of the cable with multiple connectors into the matching-colored jacks in an available component input on the HDTV, typically labelled "Component." Supported output video modes for PS3-specific component cables include 1080i, 1080p, 720p, 480p and 480i.

    Standard Audio/Video

    • Standard audio/video cables carry standard-definition audio and video and is the only type of cable to come with the PS3; all other cables are sold separately. Connect the end of the PS3-specific standard audio/video cable with a single connector to the "AV MULTI OUT" port on the back of the PS3. Connect the connectors on the other end of the cable to the matching-colored input jacks that correspond with an available standard audio/video input, typically called "A/V Input," "A/V" or "Audio/Video." Supported output video modes for PS3-specific standard audio/video cables include 480i.

    S-Video

    • PS3-specific S-video cables also carry standard-definition audio and video. Connect the end of the PS3-specific S-video cable with a single connector to the "AV MULTI OUT" port on the back of the PS3. Connect the connectors on the other end of the cable to the round input with multiple pins inside of it to the S-video port on the HDTV. Connect the red and white audio cables to the matching-colored audio inputs that correspond with the S-video input. Support output video modes for PS3-specific S-video cables include 480i.
