How to Troubleshoot a PS3

The Sony PlayStation 3 is a video game console that also plays Blu-Ray movies, supports multiplayer gaming, and can access the Internet. You need to hook up the PlayStation 3 correctly and know how to use its many functions to prevent issues accessing the Internet, watching movies as they're intended to be seen in high definition, or playing games.

      Blow the dust out of the vents using compressed air if the PS3 gets excessively hot. Use a cotton swab to remove any caked on dust.

      Set the display mode for the PS3. Select "Settings" from the main menu, then choose "Display Settings." Scroll to video output settings and verify that HDMI is selected and choose either 1080i or 1080p, as long as your television supports it. Otherwise select 480i.

      Modify the Internet connection settings if you cannot access online features such as multiplayer gaming or streaming services. Go to "Settings," then select "Network Settings." Choose "Internet Connection Settings," then choose either wired or wireless for your connection type. Select either "WPA" or "WEP" if using a wireless Internet connection, and type in the password to access your home network. Select "Auto-detect" under Ethernet operation mode, then "Automatic" for the IP address, DNS and DHCP settings.

      Clean the game discs if it has problems reading. Apply toothpaste to the scratches, and wipe it from the inside out. Rinse the disc off with rubbing alcohol. Don't rub in a circular motion as this can damage a disc.
