80GB PS3 vs. PS3 Slim

Sony released the original PlayStation 3 video-gaming console in 2006, offering a choice of hard drive sizes, including 80GB. The original PS3 has since been discontinued. Sony released the PS3 Slim -- a smaller, thinner version -- in 2009, and has manufactured 120GB, 160GB, 250GB and 320GB versions of the device. An original PS3 with an 80GB hard drive differs from a PS3 Slim primarily in terms of size, game compatibility and number of USB ports.

Size
- An original PlayStation 3 with a 80GB hard drive measures 12.8 inches wide, 10.8 inches deep and 3.9 inches tall at its tallest point. It weighs 11 lb. before optional upgrades and accessories, and without any games loaded in its drive. A standard PlayStation 3 Slim equipped with a 120GB hard drive measures 11.4 inches wide, 11.4 inches deep and 2.6 inches tall at its tallest point. It weighs 7.1 lb. before optional upgrades and accessories, and without any games loaded in its drive.
Features
- The PS3 Slim is more energy-efficient and quieter than the original PS3, according to the technology website CNET Reviews. Both devices feature built-in Blu-ray players, 256MB of DDR3 RAM and the ability to output video signals at maximum resolutions of 1,920-by-1,080 pixels. Only the original PS3 is backwards-compatible with PlayStation 2 games. Owners of the original PS3 could also install the Linux operating system on the device. However, Sony has since removed this capability on original PS3s via a firmware update, and the option was never available on the PS3 Slim.
Connectivity
- Sony equips 80GB versions of the original PS3 and all versions of the PS3 Slim with 802.11b/g Wi-Fi cards. Depending on the age of the original 80GB version of the PS3, it could have two or four USB 2.0 ports. Earlier versions of the original PS3 have four ports, while later versions have two. All versions of the PS3 Slim have two USB ports. Additional ports available on the original PS3 include one network connection, one HDMI output, one TOSLINK S/PDIF output and one PS3 audio-video output. Additional ports available on the PS3 Slim include one Ethernet port, one HDMI port, one S/PDIF and one PS3 audio-video port.
Additional Information
- Sony sold the original PS3 in black, white or silver. Available PS3 Slim colors include black, white, blue, and white with pink accents. Versions of the original 80GB PS3 shipped with Sixaxis controllers up until August 2007. Sony sold all subsequent versions of the original PS3 with DualShock 3 controllers. All versions of the PS3 Slim come with DualShock 3 controllers.

PlayStation 3
