How to Dry a PS3 Controller That Water Was Spilled On

The DualShock 3 is the third iteration of Sony's proprietary dual-analog controller, with several features added to the PlayStation 3 (PS3) version of the controller. Most notably, this includes a rumble feature, wireless functionality and a motion-sensing accelerometer supported certain games. Like many integrated electronics, the PS3 controller is prone to failure or malfunction if it is used while water or other liquids leak into the chipset or motherboard. The remedy to fixing this problem and reviving your controller is similar to that of a damaged cellphone.

Instructions

    • 1

Power down the controller immediately by holding down the home button and selecting "Turn Off Controller," if possible. If the controller is charging by USB, unplug it.

    • 2

Wipe down the front and back of the controller of excess water or liquid. Either place the controller face down over a towel or into a plastic bag full of uncooked rice.

    • 3

Wait at least 24 hours before attempting to use the controller again. Some prefer to use the uncooked rice because moisture is actively drawn away from the electronic components, just like a silica packet inside of certain manufactured goods.
