How to Make Game Transfers Faster to the PS3

The PlayStation 3 (PS3) contains an internal 2.5-inch hard drive that can store a variety of files. One of the many uses for this internal storage is downloading free demos and purchasing fully functional digital copies of games from the PlayStation Network store. The file size depends on the game being downloaded, but can be upward of several gigabytes for a PS3 game demo, which can be a long wait if your PS3's connection to the Internet is weak.

Things You'll Need

  • Ethernet cable
  • Solid state disk drive (optional)

Instructions

Use an Ethernet cable to connect the PS3 directly to your router or cable/DSL modem. A wired connection means that your files will transfer at the maximum speed allowed by your Internet provider's bandwidth cap.

    • 2

Move the PS3 closer to your Wi-Fi router if extra Ethernet cable isn't an option. Wireless routers have a maximum operational range. The closer your PS3 is to the outer edge of that maximum range the weaker the signal will be. A weak signal can greatly slow down file transfers and even drop them completely.

Check that your wireless router is configured to 802.11g by connecting to the router by inputting the IP address indicated in the router's manual into the URL of your computer's internet browser of choice. 802.11g, or Wireless-G, is the fastest wireless signal the PS3 can support, but it is also compatible with Wireless-B, a slower signal type. Running Wireless-B with no Wireless-G compatibility will greatly decrease wireless performance. If you have other wireless devices that do not support Wireless-G, you have the option of broadcasting in a Mixed mode, which turns on both B and G signals.

Turn off any background items on the PS3 that use your Internet connection. The download manager gives you the option of using the PS3's other functions while a file downloads in the background. Using functions such as the Internet browser, digital video streaming or other transfers either from the Internet or home media server will bottleneck the file download speed.

Replace the internal hard drive with a faster model. The PS3 comes with a standard mechanical drive, which can come in either 5,400 RPM or 7,200 RPM speeds. The greater the RPM, the greater the speed of the hard drive. Replacing the mechanical drive with a solid state disk (SSD) will greatly increase read and write times to internal storage, improving not only download performance but boot up and game loading speeds.
