How to Hook Up a PS3 to a Computer to Transfer Music

The Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) is equipped with a feature called ̶0;DLNA̶1; which stands for Digital Living Network Alliance. Because of this feature, when your PS3 and computer are both connected to your home network, the PS3 is able to access the music, photo and video files stored on your computer. This file sharing feature is activated when you have enabled the media stream function in both the Windows Media Player software on your computer and on your PS3 system.

  1. Connect Your PS3 Your Home Network

      Refer to your router̵7;s manual for instructions on how to hook up the device to receive your Internet signal. Also refer to the manual to learn how to log into the router and set up a network name (SSID) and security key.

      Turn on the PS3 and the TV to which it is connected.

      Navigate to ̶0;Settings̶1; in the XMB menu. Scroll down and highlight ̶0;Network Settings̶1; then press the ̶0;X̶1; button to select it. Select ̶0;Internet Connection̶1; from the next menu. Select ̶0;Enable.̶1; Select ̶0;Internet Connection Settings.̶1;

      Select ̶0;Yes̶1; when prompted to continue. Select ̶0;Easy̶1; when prompted for a ̶0;Setting method.̶1; Select ̶0;Wireless̶1; when prompted to select your preferred connection method. Select ̶0;Scan̶1; at the next prompt. The PS3 will conduct a scan for the Wi-Fi signals available in your area. It should detect your home network if everything was set up properly.

      Highlight and select your network name (SSID) from the list of available networks. Press the Right arrow key on the PS3 controller to continue. Select the type of security encryption you are using (̶0;WEP̶1; or ̶0;WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK̶1;).

      Press the ̶0;X̶1; button to bring up the on-screen keyboard. Enter your network security key. Press the ̶0;Start̶1; key on the controller to close the on-screen keyboard. Press the ̶0;X̶1; key again to save your network settings.

      Select ̶0;Test Connection̶1; when prompted. If the network setting was entered properly your connection test should come back successful.

    Transfer Music from Computer to PS3

      Launch Windows Media Player. Open the ̶0;Stream̶1; drop-down menu. Select ̶0;Turn on media streaming with HomeGroup.̶1; A wizard will open. Put a check mark in the box next to ̶0;Music̶1; at the first prompt. Click ̶0;Next.̶1; Follow the remaining on-screen prompts to turn on media streaming on your computer.

      Open the ̶0;Stream̶1; drop-down menu again. Select ̶0;Automatically allow device to play my media.̶1; Select ̶0;Automatically allow device to play my media̶1; again at the next prompt to confirm.

      Select ̶0;More streaming options̶1; from the ̶0;Stream̶1; drop-down menu. Make sure ̶0;Show device on̶1; is set to ̶0;Local network.̶1; Click ̶0;Allow all.̶1;

      Turn on the PS3 and the TV to which it is connected. Navigate to ̶0;Settings̶1; in the XMB menu. Select ̶0;Network Settings.̶1; Select ̶0;Media Server Connection.̶1; Select ̶0;Enable.̶1;

      Navigate to ̶0;Music̶1; in the XMB menu. Select the listing of your computer. You will be able to stream whatever music files are stored in your default ̶0;Music̶1; folder on the computer to the PS3. To copy a music file from the computer to the PS3, select the file you want to copy then press the triangle button on the PS3 controller to open the options menu. Select ̶0;Copy̶1; from the menu.
