How to Brick the PS3 3.56

With older model PlayStation 3 systems, bricking them, or rendering them useless, is a straightforward process. Simply interrupting a firmware update would transform your PSP into an expensive paperweight. Newer models make this more difficult. PS3 Slims protect their system files on a ROM chip that is only accessed during very important upgrades. Version 3.55 was such an upgrade, but there hasn̵7;t been one since. Ways still exist to brick your PS3 -- you just have to get a little more creative and a bit less high tech.

Instructions

  1. Original PS3

    • 1

Turn on your PS3 and use your controller's left thumb stick to press left or right to select "Settings" on the XrossMediaBar (XMB).

    • 2

Press down on your thumbstick to select "System Update." Click "X."

    • 3

Select "Update via Internet" and click "X" to download a system update. If there are no updates available, try again later. Wait for the update to download.

    • 4

Select "Install" when the update has finished downloading. The system will restart and begin to install the update.

    • 5

Turn off your PS3 using the hard switch on the back of the system while the update is installing. This will corrupt your system files and render your system unusable.

    PS3 Slim

    • 6

Cover all of the vents on your system using duct tape or a similar product.

    • 7

Turn on the system and insert a game into the disc drive.

    • 8

Play your game for a couple of hours. The internal temperature of your system will rise to dangerous levels since it is unable to vent the hot air. Play until the system shuts off.

    • 9

Repeat this procedure until your system is permanently damaged and unusable.
