How to Activate a PS3 Controller To a PS3 Without a Charger

PlayStation 3 became the first gaming console to use only wireless controllers when it was released by Sony Computer Entertainment in 2006. The Microsoft Xbox 360 uses both wireless and wired controllers, while PS3 only uses wireless controllers. To charge a wireless PS3 controller, you must plug a USB cable into your controller and into the PS3. However, you do not need the USB cable to activate PS3 controllers and connect them to the console.

  Turn on your television, then power on the PS3. First, you must press the switch in the back of the PS3 to turn on the main power, then press the power button just below the disc drive. The lights on the power switch will turn from red to green and blue to let you know that it is on.

  Wait for the PS3 to power up and for the main PS3 menu to come on the screen. Press and hold the PlayStation button on the center of the controller for a few seconds to activate the controller. You will know it has been activated when four red lights at the top of the controller flash three times, then only one red light will appear next to "1" to let you know that this is the first controller.

  Press the "Start" button on the controller to finish the activation, then you can assign a number to it. If you want this controller to stay in the first position, don't make any changes.
