How to Troubleshoot Problems With a PS3 That Freezes

If your PlayStation 3 console has frozen, you can troubleshoot it to determine the reason. The PS3 can freeze for various reasons including overheating and the need for an update. The system can even randomly freeze due to a dirty game disc. You may be able to resolve freezing with a simple action. Basic troubleshooting of the system does not require great technical skill and is recommended by Sony before reaching out for technical assistance.

      Move the PS3 to a location that is cool and well-ventilated if it freezes during game play. The console can overheat and freeze or unexpectedly close if it lacks sufficient ventilation.

      Remove the game disc from your system if it continues to freeze during game play. Wipe the disc with a soft cloth to clean it. Re-insert the disc and restart the game.

      Disconnect all the accessories currently connected to your PS3 if the screen is frozen. Press and hold the ̶0;Power̶1; button on the system until it turns off. Release the button and press it again to restart the system.

      Update the PS3 if it continues to freeze. Press ̶0;Select̶1; and click ̶0;Settings.̶1; Click ̶0;System Update̶1; and then click ̶0;Update Via Internet.̶1; Wait for the system to check for an update. The available update is automatically downloaded and installed on your PS3 system.
