How to Fix the Loading Mechanism on a PS3 Blu-ray Drive

The PlayStation 3 video game console has a front-mounted, automatic loading Blu-ray disc drive. A disc that sticks halfway in the slot indicates a problem with the loading mechanism. You can fix the mechanism so that it once again loads discs inserted into the slot. The PS3 will not have to be disassembled in order to fix the mechanism.

Things You'll Need

  • Electrical cleaning spray
  • Cotton swab
  • Blu-ray cleaner disc
  • Cleaner disc solution

Instructions

    • 1

Press the rocker switch on the back left edge of the PS3. Let the red LED on the front-right edge go out before continuing. Grip the front edge of the disc that is stuck inside the front-mounted slot. Pull the disc out of the slot, and place it aside.

    • 2

Insert an end of the plastic straw into the nozzle on the electrical cleaning spray can. Shake the can for 10 seconds. Insert the end of the tube into the slot at its far-left edge. Dispense a 1-second burst of spray. Move the tube to the center of the slot. Dispense another 1-second burst of spray. Move the tube to the far-right edge, and dispense a third 1-second burst of spray.

    • 3

Apply Blu-ray cleaner disc solution to the end of a cotton swab. Run the moistened tip around the edge of the cleaner disc. Apply three drops of the solution to the bottom of the disc, and insert it halfway into the slot. Press the rocker switch, to illuminate the red LED on the right-front edge of the PS3. Push the disc into the PS3. Let the red LED extinguish itself, as the loading mechanism pulls the disc inside. Let the green LED blink and go solid before continuing.

    • 4

Press your finger or thumb against the pressure-sensitive "Eject" button to the left of the green LED. Remove your finger as soon as the green LED begins to blink. Let the lading mechanism eject the disc halfway out of the slot. Grip the rim of the disc, and pull it out.

    • 5

Press the pressure-sensitive power switch directly to the left of the green LED. Remove your finger as soon as the LED starts blinking. Let the green LED extinguish itself and be replaced by a solid red LED. Spray a burst of compressed air against the slot. Wipe the edge of the disc with a soft cloth to remove excess spray.
