Samsung Design
The design of a Samsung HDTV tells the quality of the image it can produce, stated in lines of resolution and scanning procedure. HD models produce 720p or 1080i horizontal lines, and full HD models produce 1080p resolution. Interlaced (i) scanning illuminates odd lines in one sweep and even in the next, and progressive (p) scanning illuminates all lines in one sweep. The most advanced Samsung full HDTVs also support 3D. PS3 offers several connection cable options.
Analog Cables
PS3 comes equipped with a composite video cable, which produces the lowest quality of all PS3 signals, at 480i resolution. The cable connects with video on a yellow RCA push-in jack and audio on red and white. A component video cable provides a better connection with three RCA plugs for the video coded red, blue and green, and carries analog HD signals at 720p, 1080i and 1080p resolution, but does not support 3D. The component cable also carries analog audio on red and white RCA plugs.
HDMI
With an HDMI connection, PS3 can send digital 1080p resolution and 3D to a high-end Samsung full HDTV with the 3D option, providing the best gaming a PS3-Samsung combination can produce. Using HDMI for lower resolution Samsung HD models produces a better picture than a component video cable because of the digital format. The HDMI connection also provides clearer digital sound and includes control features between the two devices. PS3 does not include a component video or an HDMI cable. They must be purchased separately.
PS3 Video Output Settings
Once connected to a Samsung HDTV, the operator must first select the connection format option and then the resolution. For 3D, he must also set the display size. See the Video Output Settings section of the owner's manual. Selecting a resolution lower than the HDTV's design does not allow it to operate at its full potential. Selecting a higher resolution does not improve picture quality and may decrease it in some cases. For best results, always match PS3 resolution to the Samsung HDTV design.
