PS3 Format Outputs
PS3 produces various outputs to reach a wider audience worldwide. Some formats produce high-definition signals and some don't. HDMI produces HD and 3D. The console comes with a composite video and audio cord that connects to almost any TV, but only supports standard TV resolution. To use any of the advanced formats, you need to buy additional cables which plug into the PS3 on one end and have connectors for component video, VGA or HDMI on the other. Each cable must be purchased separately.
Samsung HDTV Inputs
Samsung HDTVs usually have input connections compatible with the PS3 optional cables. The component video input uses three RCA push-on connectors color-coded red, green and blue for the video signals, and two more coded red for right audio and white for left. The video portion of VGA uses a 15-pin D shaped connector with three rows of five pins each, along with the audio RCA plugs. The HDMI connection uses a 19-pin port with edge connectors to carry video, audio and various control signals in one cable.
Resolution
Resolution defines the characteristics of the signal sent and the capabilities of the HDTV to present them. Standard definition signals and TV sets have 480i lines of horizontal resolution that are scanned in an interlaced (i) pattern illuminating odd lines in one sweep and even in the next. HD signals and TVs use 720p, 1080i or 1080p resolution. Progressive (p) scanning illuminates all lines in a single scan. Signals for 3D operate at 1080p and send two signals to the screen simultaneously. The operator wears special glasses to filter the signals to create the illusion of depth.
HDMI Cable
If your Samsung HDTV has 720p or 1080i resolution, sending 1080p via any format won't improve the picture. But sending a resolution that matches the design of the TV presents the best picture it can produce. The HDMI cable sold by Sony supports all signals. Set the output of your PS3 to match the Samsung's resolution in the PS3 Video Output Settings. Again, the best picture comes at HDMI 1080p resolution and 3D, but your Samsung must support it. You can also set color, contrast and brightness levels to suit your personal preferences at any resolution on a Samsung HDTV.
