How to Make a PS3 Surround Sound Connection

Numerous video games for the Sony PlayStation 3 include support for Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound. To output a surround sound signal from a PS3 game, your console must be properly connected to your audio receiver using an optical audio cable. You will also need to configure the audio settings on your PS3 to enable the Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound output signal.

      Turn off your PS3 console. Plug one end of the optical audio cable into the port labeled "Digital Out (Optical)" on the back of the PS3.

      Connect the other end of the optical audio cable into the "Digital In (Optical)" port on your audio receiver.

      Press the power button on the PS3.

      Use the left directional button to move to the "Settings" menu.

      Press the down directional button to highlight "Sound Settings."

      Go to the "Audio Output" sub-menu, highlight "Optical Digital" and press the X button on your controller.

      Highlight "Dolby Digital 5.1 ch." from the list of audio formats and press the X button.

      Press the right directional button, then the O button, to save the settings and return to the main PS3 menu.
