Getting Started
The first step is connecting your PlayStation 3 to the Internet. Turn on your PS3 and go to the Settings option on your cross media bar. From here, navigate to Network Settings. Then, go to Internet Settings which is located at the bottom of the list. Decide if you want to use wireless or wired Internet. If you have an Ethernet cable, you can use wired Internet. Then enter your user name and password which you use for your Internet provider. From here, you can create a user account for the PlayStation Network. After this, your PS3 will be online and you can use your controller to play games.
Online Gaming
The PlayStation Network offers numerous download games which you cannot find in video game stores, such as the pool game "Hustle Kings." The majority of these games are multiplayer online games, meaning that anyone else who is connected to the PlayStation Network can challenge you. When playing an online game, your PS3 controller works in the exact same way as it would if you were playing an offline, single-player game, or an offline multiplayer game. So, if you own "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare" and want to take it online, your control scheme would be the same as if you were playing it offline.
Another Controller
If your PlayStation 3 is online -- but your onsite friend's PlayStation 3 is not -- she can still use her controller to play online games from your machine. Simply take her controller and sync it to your machine by physically plugging it in. The four red lights on the controller will start to blink. Press the center button which has a PlayStation logo on it. The four red lights will stop blinking and one solid red light will remain on. Unplug the controller. The four red lights will blink again until your press the center button again. Once the center button is pressed, one red light will remain on and the controller can be used to play online games.
Parental Warning
When you are playing games online with your PS3, you can use a headset or a Bluetooth device to actually talk to the people you are playing against. However, this feature is not censored in any way, meaning that adult subject matter and adult language can be used. If you are a parent of a younger child, be aware that he may be exposed to conversation topics you would not approve of. Be cautious and observe your child's online playing to make sure he is not hearing inappropriate material, or giving out sensitive information -- such as his home address -- to an online gamer.
