How to Get a PS3 to Run Well on an Old TV

The PS3 offers high-definition gaming using either component or HDMI video connections for televisions that support high-definition input. If the television you wish to play the PS3 on does not support high definition, however, you must connect the system using standard-definition connectors, such as RCA composite cables. When hooking up the PlayStation 3 with composite cables, you must revert the system to standard-definition 480p mode, else the image will appear distorted or no image will appear at all.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect your PS3 system to your television using a composite connection cable. Composite cables have red, yellow and white RCA plugs. Note that some older televisions only have white and yellow RCA connectors; if this is the case, do not connect the red RCA plug into anything.

    • 2

Turn on the television and select the "Video" input setting.

    • 3

Press and hold the center button on the PS3 controller until you hear the unit audibly beep. The PlayStation 3 will start and will automatically revert back to standard-definition 480p mode.
