How to Get a PS3 Slim to Bitstream

When the original Sony PlayStation 3 was released, bitstreaming -- specifically Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD and Master Audio -- was a complex process that required a certain type of setup. Both the original PS3 and PS3 Slim contain a component called an HDMI chip, but the Slim's is geared for bitstreaming. This is advantageous, since bitstreaming is a desirable feature for many gamers. It provides superior high definition audio for games, music and Blu-ray discs, ultimately increasing your multimedia experience.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on the PlayStation 3 Slim console. The main screen appears.

    • 2

Scroll to the "Settings" icon using the directional pad or left analog stick. A vertical menu appears.

    • 3

Choose the "Video Settings" icon, and press "X" to proceed to the next menu. Two options appear: "BD Audio Output Format (Optical Digital)" and "BD Audio Output Format (HDMI)."

    • 4

Press "X" on the "BD Audio Output Format (Optical Digital)" icon. A small menu appears. Select "Bitstream (Mix)" and press "X." Press the "O" button to return to the previous menu.

    • 5

Repeat Step 4 to select "BD Audio Output Format (HDMI)." Select "Bitstream" from the next menu. Your PS3 Slim is now set for bitstreaming.
