How to Create Dynamic Themes for PS3

The Sony PlayStation 3 video game console features a customizable menu system, known as the Xross Media Bar (XMB), that allows for the creation of wallpapers, themes and icons. Dynamic themes are special aesthetic alterations that add animated backgrounds to the XMB. The Dynamic Theme Editor, an unofficial Windows application, allows users to modify existing dynamic themes in order to create custom animated backgrounds. Dynamic themes use special graphics files that can only be edited with Adobe Photoshop. Images in the existing dynamic theme can be altered, replaced or removed entirely from the background.

  Download and install the Dynamic Theme Editor application.

  Download and install the NVIDIA DDS Photoshop plug-in.

  Launch the Dynamic Theme Editor application. Select one of the five themes that you want to edit by clicking on the corresponding tab.

  Click the "Open" button under the Step 2 heading to access the background files. Double-click on the file that you want to edit and choose the Photoshop application when prompted.

  Edit the image using Photoshop until you are satisfied with the outcome. Select "Save" from the File drop-down menu on the main Photoshop tool bar.

  Repeat steps 4 and 5 until you have made all of the desired changes to the background files.

  Return to the Dynamic Theme Editor application. Click the "Open" button underneath the Step 3 heading to access the icon listing.

  Select the icon that you want to edit and open it with the Photoshop application. Edit the icon graphic and save the file. Repeat this process until all of the theme icons have been edited.

  Save the generated theme file to a USB flash drive. Insert the flash drive into the USB port on the front panel of the PlayStation 3 console. Browse to the Theme Settings section of the PS3 XMB. Highlight your custom dynamic theme and choose "Install."
