FAQ for the PS3 Controller

Sony's PlayStation 3 is a seventh-generation video game console, originally released in late 2006. This console features Blu-ray compatibility for games and movies, a built-in, user-upgradable SATA hard drive up to 320 Gb and 256 Mb of memory. The PS3 also includes gigabit Ethernet, HDMI 1.4 connectors, and controllers that can connect wirelessly via Bluetooth or using an optional USB 2.0 cable. Over the release life of the PS3, Sony has offered two kinds of controllers.
  1. Are PS3 Controller Batteries Removable?

    • Sixaxis and DualShock 3 controllers contain a rechargeable, nonremovable battery. This means you can't take the battery out to charge it separately. It also means that you will need to replace your controllers in a few years, after the battery loses its ability to hold a charge.

Do PS3 Controllers Work With Other Devices?

    • Ps3 controllers work only on the PS3. Even though they use Bluetooth and USB connectors, you can't hook them up to a personal computer. The USB port may charge the controller's battery. Ps3 controllers won't charge from all USB sources, either. They work with the PS3 and with your computer, but can't draw power from a powered USB hub or an AC to USB charger.

How Do the Sixaxis And DualShock 3 Controllers Differ?

    • Sony's Sixaxis controller shipped with the original PlayStation 3. It offered USB and Bluetooth connectivity, but no vibration option. Introduced in the US in 2008, the DualShock 3 controller includes a ̶0;rumble pack,̶1; weighs 40 percent moreand uses a more opaque black plastic casing.

Will PS3 Controllers Charge in Standby?

    • While many other electronic devices trickle charge accessories on standby, the PS3 provides power to its controllers only while it's actively on. The USB ports go inactive in standby mode. This reduces the ̶0;phantom load̶1; of inactive devices, but prevents gamers from leaving their controllers to charge overnight.

    Do PS3 Controllers Require Synchronization?

    • When you first set up your game console, the controllers can't communicate wirelessly with the PS3. They require synchronization. Plug them in using the provided USB cable and allow the system to recognize the controllers. If you're using a DualShock 3 controller, activate the vibration during the sync process. After synchronization, the controllers communicate with the main console via BlueTooth and require no cabling.
