How to Install a 40 Gig PS3 Drive to an 80 Gig PS3

The only difference between a 40GB and 80GB PlayStation 3 hard drive is the capacity, as Sony did not make any changes to the drives between PS3 models. You can swap a drive from a 40GB PS3 to an 80GB machine by removing the old hard drive. You can easily swap the drives around as needed, which is useful when you are trying to get saves or other information off of an old hard drive.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut off your PlayStation 3, and unplug the console.

    • 2

Lay the PlayStation 3 on its side so you can easily access the hard drive bay.

    • 3

Pull the hard drive panel cover off of the console.

    • 4

Unscrew the single blue screw on the top of the drive. Push the latch on the hard drive to the right. Remove the 80GB hard drive from the PlayStation 3.

    • 5

Unscrew the hard drive tray from the 80GB drive if you need it for the 40GB drive. If you have pulled the 40GB drive directly out of another PS3, you can use the drive brackets already in place. Slide the 40GB drive in to the drive bay, and press the latch closed to the left. Screw the blue screw in place, and replace the hard drive panel cover.
