How to Make a PS3 3D-Ready

The PlayStation 3, also referred to as PS3, includes a few unique features helping to set the gaming console apart from other contenders, such as Blu-Ray playback and free online game-play. Sony also released a firmware update allowing the system to play 3D games and movies. But before placing those 3D glasses on your face, be sure to properly configure your PS3 by obtaining the necessary update, using the proper video output accessory and configuring the console's video settings.

      Turn on the PS3 and log in to your PlayStation Network account. If available, a prompt appears asking you to update to the latest firmware. Confirm the update. You must have at least version 3.30 to utilize the 3D function of the system.

      Press the controller's "PS" button to load the XMB menu and view the "Settings" section.

      Go to "Display Settings."

      Choose "Video Output Settings."

      Select "HDMI" and choose "Automatic."

      Turn off the PS3 and connect the system to your 3D TV using the high-speed HDMI cable. The PS3's HDMI port sits on the console's rear. Refer to your 3D TV's manual for the set's HDMI input location, if necessary.

      Turn on the TV and PS3 and set the 3D TV's input to "HDMI" by pressing the "Input" or "HDMI" button on the 3D TV. The TV displays your PS3's video output.
