Does a PS3 Have a Reset Button?

The PS3 is a powerful gaming system that supports full HD content in video games and movies, the use of Blu-ray discs and more. The PS3's appearance is sleek, aided by the fact that it's not complicated by numerous buttons or controls. Although the PS3 console doesn't have a dedicated reset button, you do have an option to reset it that only requires a few moments.
  1. Controls on the PS3 Console

    • The PS3 has a "standby" button, an "eject" button and power switch. The "standby" button is what most people think of as the "power button," though technically it only puts the PS3 in standby mode. It's near the disc slot, and it's in the shape of a circle broken by a line passing through it. The "eject" button is in front of the disc slot and has an arrow on it; it simply ejects an inserted disc. The power switch is on the back of the unit, and using it entirely cuts power to the PS3.

    Manually Resetting the PS3

    • The entire reset process for the the PS3 only takes about 10 seconds. Just press and hold the "standby" button for about two seconds until you hear a beep. After a few seconds, the PS3 will enter standby mode; any image on the display you're using will disappear, and the PS3's indicator light will turn red. Wait a moment and press the "standby" button again to power it on and complete the reset.

    Information on Resetting

    • Sony recommends you remove any inserted discs before putting the PS3 into standby mode. This isn't required, but you could remove the disk first by pressing the "eject" button. You can manually reset your PS3 at any time at all, whether you're playing a game, at the XMB menu or even during a rare game freeze. Just keep in mind that if you reset the PS3 while playing a game, you'll lose any unsaved data.

    Video Reset

    • A video reset puts the PS3's video output to a standard setting any TV can accept, which is especially helpful if you connect the PS3 to another TV and find you can't view anything on the screen. First, press and hold the "standby" button to put the PS3 in standby mode. After the indicator light has turned red, press and hold the "standby" button again for about five seconds. You'll hear a single beep right away; release the button when you hear the second beep. This resets the video output to a standard, low-resolution image. You can configure the video settings by going to the "Settings" section of the XMB menu and then selecting "Display Settings," then "Video Output Settings."
