Visual Effects for Playing Music on the PS3

During music playback, the PlayStation 3 offers visualizations to keep your screen interesting and give you something to look at while you listen to music; this is also called the Visual Player. There are three Visual Players. You cannot install new or custom visualizations. Your PlayStation 3 console can play music in MP3, WMV, WAV, MP4 and ATRAC formats, so long as they are not protected by DRM.
  1. Changing Visual Player

    • Once you've selected a song, press the triangle button on your controller. From the audio control panel, go to the Visual Player option, which looks like a small rectangle. Click it to change between the three installed Visual Player options available. You can also change the visualization by pressing the square button while on the music screen. To navigate the PS3 while music is playing, press the PS button and move about the XMB menu as normal.

    Theme Background

    • Theme background appears with the stream of color and corresponding sparkles. This basic visualization will match the system color for the PS3 menu, and gently waves up and down while you're listening to music. This visual effect maintains the same speed and general motion regardless of the tempo of your music.

    Random Designs

    • An amalgamation of random designs, shapes, waves and colors move, swirl and zoom in time with your music. This visualization randomly cycles through a similar set of patterns and layouts, and can range anywhere from looking like an expanse of water, a rain of color squares, or a view in a strange and colorful valley. The speed of this visualization varies. You can cycle through animation by pressing the right joystick in any direction.

    Earth Rendition

    • A slow view of a rotating rendition of Earth is presented from a number of angles and distances, sometimes focusing on a certain set of continents, and other times showing the entire planet. Occasionally this visualization displays other solar events, such as an eclipse. The speed of this visualization is in no way modified by your music; the display changes every few minutes.
