After inserting a disc into your PlayStation 3 system, you would naturally expect to hear the whirring of the spinning disc. The disc must spin in order for the system's laser to read its data, so a lack of spinning denotes a serious issue. Don't panic if you can't hear the whirring; the PS3's optical drive is rather quiet. If you need to know if the disc is spinning, check first with your ears, then attempt to access the disc. If the system can read the data, you know the drive is functioning properly.

Insert a disc into your PlayStation 3.

Lower your ear to the disc slot on the front of the system and listen for the whirring sound of a spinning disc. If you hear it, the disc is spinning; if not, continue on.

Select the disc from the PlayStation menu, and click "X" to access it. If the content on the disc plays, you can be sure the disc is spinning, even if you can't hear it.
