How to Hook Up a PS3 to a TV After Moving It From HDMI

Occasionally when you switch your PS3 from one TV to another, you'll encounter a problem with the video resolution. If you were using an HDMI cord before, PS3 will continue to try to output a high-definition image that current setup may not support. After connecting all the cables correctly, you can easily reset the video output and configure the PS3 settings for your new setup.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the TV and your PS3 if it's currently on. If you can't see the PS3 options on screen, you can force the unit to turn off by pressing and holding the power button until you hear the unit beep. In a moment the indicator light will turn red and the system will be off.

    • 2

Locate the video and audio connections on your TV. Usually these are on the back of the unit, but sometimes you'll find them on the front or side.

    • 3

Select the best option for your connection based on the available TV ports and the cords you have. Other than HDMI, the best connection you can use is component, which uses five ports: red, green and blue for video, and red and white for audio. The next best choice is S-video, followed by RCA, sometimes called "composite." S-video is a large circular port with multiple holes inside, and it typically uses smaller red and white RCA connections for audio. RCA uses three identical connections colored yellow, red and white.

    • 4

Plug the single connector into the PS3 using the "AV multi out" port on its back; then plug the other end of the cord into the TV.

    • 5

Turn on your PS3, and turn on your TV, and on the TV select the correct input for the PS3. Usually you'll just need to press the "input" or "source" button on the remote to find the input that the PS3 is connected to. This process varies for different TVs, so you might need to check the manual for specifics.

    • 6

Reset the PS3's video settings if the TV cannot display anything from the PS3. Turn off the PS3 again by holding the power button. After the indicator light is red, wait a few moments, and then press and hold the power button again for about five seconds. You'll hear the PS3 beep once right away; when you hear a second beep in a few seconds, let go of the power button. The PS3 will now be outputting to a standard resolution that your TV is compatible with.

Manually configure the resolution. You need to use the TV's maximum resolution for this, so check its documentation if you don't already have that information. Log into your PS3 account and navigate to the XMB menu's "Settings" section and select "Display Settings," then "Video Output Settings." Select the cables you used to connect to your TV and select all the resolutions your TV is compatible with. Finally, select the TV's aspect ratio, and then your PS3 video setup will be complete.
