Do You Need Anything to Watch 3-D on a PS3?

The Sony PlayStation 3 is a gaming console capable of playing compatible games and Blu-ray discs in 3-D. To watch a Blu-ray movie in 3-D, you must have a television that supports 3-D technology, a PS3 hooked up through an HDMI cable, 3-D glasses specific to your model of television and a 3-D Blu-ray movie.
  1. 3-D Television

    • Watching Blu-ray movies in 3-D on your television requires that you have a TV that supports 3-D technology. Several brands and models of 3-D televisions are available, with various specifications and in various sizes. Most 3-D televisions are higher-end models that demand a higher price. Some televisions require that you activate 3-D mode in the TV settings, while others recognize the 3-D output from supported games and Blu-ray movies in the PlayStation 3 automatically.

    3-D Glasses and Transmitter

    • To view 3-D on your 3-D television, you must have a pair of brand-specific 3-D glasses and a 3-D transmitter. Some televisions have the transmitter built into the unit, while others require that you purchase an external transmitter. Refer to your television's specifications to find out if it requires a 3-D transmitter. Note that a 3-D transmitter does not enable non--3-D televisions to broadcast a 3-D picture.

    HDMI Cable

    • You must connect your PlayStation 3 to your 3-D television using an HDMI cable to take advantage of the 3-D capability of the system. HDMI stands for "high definition multimedia interface" and is a single cable that transfers both audio and video signals. HDMI is currently the highest quality high-definition connection type, an improvement over component video.

    3-D Blu-ray Movie

    • Lastly, you must have a 3-D Blu-ray movie disc or a 2-D/3-D combination Blu-ray movie disc. Verify that the movie you wish to watch is a 3-D--capable movie; this information is usually located on the packaging or on the disc itself. After you insert the disc and arrive at the title screen, enable the 3-D option, if necessary. Some Blu-ray's automatically recognize that 3-D is active on your television and do not require you to select a 3-D mode.
