How to Set Up a PS3 Controller to Steer With Arrow Buttons

The PS3's official controllers, the DualShock 3 and Sixaxis, have identical button layouts. Each controller includes a directional pad, sometimes referred to as the d-pad, which is composed of four arrow-shaped buttons. The d-pad is generally used to move characters, highlight items or perform any number of miscellaneous functions. Games with vehicles generally assign movement controls to the analog stick. In some games, however, you can change the controls and assign the steering controls to the d-pad.

Instructions

    • 1

Select the "Option/Settings" menu on the game's main menu. Some games allow you to open this menu within the game itself by pressing the "Start" button and selecting "Option/Settings."

    • 2

Select "Controls/Controller Settings" or a similarly titled option. Most games will display a list of all the game's controls, usually separated by categories such as action and movement.

    • 3

Select the "Left" and "Right" steering controls on-screen and press the "X" button (may vary depending on the game) to initiate a change. Press the "Left" and "Right" buttons on the directional pad respectively to assign those buttons as the steering controls.
