How to Open Up the DI 524 Port for PS3

The Sony PlayStation 3 provides you with a rich amount of exclusive content obtainable only while online through the Sony network. If you are using a D-Link DI-524 router, you may experience problems establishing or maintaining connectivity with the network. In addition to a limitation in network content, this problem can hinder your ability to play online games. This problem is typically the result of the D-Link failing to route traffic properly between your broadband modem and PS3. Thankfully, this can be resolved with port forwarding. To ensure a stable, trouble-free connection, open the PS3 ports on your router. Configure your PS3 to obtain a static IP address from your router, and then forward all ports the PS3 uses to the specified IP.

Instructions

  1. Obtain PS3 MAC Address

    • 1

Turn on the PS3. On the XMB menu, go over to "Settings," then select "Network Settings."

    • 2

Select "Settings and Connection Status List." This displays a list of statistics and addresses in a new screen.

    • 3

Move down to the bottom of the screen, and write down the alphanumeric address next to "MAC Address."

    • 4

Press the "Back" button to go back to the list of available settings, and then go over to your computer.

Assign IP to PS3 MAC Address

    • 5

Open your browser. Type the IP "192.168.0.1" in its address bar, then press "Enter." This displays an Enter Network Password dialog.

    • 6

Type "admin" inside the "User Name" field and then type in your password. If you have not configured a password for the D-524, leave the field empty.

    • 7

Click "OK" to log in. This automatically takes you to the DI-524 AirPlus configuration screen.

    • 8

Click the "Home" tab, and then select the "DHCP" button on the left side of the screen. This shows DHCP server-related settings at the center of the page.

    • 9

Click "Enabled" in the "Static DHCP" section, and type "PS3" in the "Name" field.

    • 10

Type "101" (without the quotes) in the "IP" address field, and then type the alphanumeric MAC you wrote down in the "MAC Address" field. Click the "Apply" button to save.

    • 11

Leave the D-Link configuration screen open, and return to your PS3.

    Configure PS3 Network Settings

    • 12

Move down to the bottom of the settings list, and select "Network Settings." Go over to the right, and select "Internet Connection Settings."

    • 13

Select "OK" on the "Adjust settings for connection to the Internet..." message screen. This takes you to the "Select a Setting Method" screen. Select "Custom" from the list of options. This opens the "Select a Connection Method" screen.

    • 14

Click "Wired Connection" if connecting to your DI-524 via Ethernet cable, and select "Wireless" if connecting wirelessly to your router. This takes you to an "Operation Mode" screen. Choose the "Manual Settings" option on this screen. This opens a "Speed and Duplex" menu.

    • 15

Select "Auto-Detect" on the Speed and Duplex menu. The following screen is the IP Address Setting menu. Select "Manual" on this menu. This sends you to a screen used for configuring your PS3's IP address manually.

    • 16

Enter the following settings next to each address type, and then press "X" to save and continue.

      IP Address: 192.168.0.101

      Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

      Default Router: 192.168.0.1

      Primary DNS: 192.168.0.1

      Secondary DNS: 8.8.8.8

    • 17

Select "Automatic" on the "MTU" selection menu, and then select "Do Not Use" on the "Proxy Server" menu. This takes you to the "UPnP Setup" window. Select "Disable" to prevent port-forwarding conflicts. This takes you to a review page.

    • 18

Double-check all the settings on the review page, and click the "X" button to save. This takes you to a "Test Connection" screen. Press your "X" button to test your new settings, and then go back to the D-Link configuration screen on your computer.

    Forward PS3 Ports

    • 19

Click "Advanced" at the top, and then click the "Virtual Server" button. This is where you input the port numbers the PS3 uses.

    • 20

Click the "Enabled" radio button. Type "PS3-1" in the "Name" field, and then type "192.168.0.101" in the "Private IP" field.

    • 21

Click to expand the "Protocol Type" menu, and select "TCP."

    • 22

Enter "5223" in both the "Private Port" and "Public Port" boxes, and then click the "Always" radio button. Click "Apply" to add to the Virtual Servers List below.

    • 23

Go back to the top of the screen. Type "PS3-2" in the "Name" field, and type "192.168.0.101" in the "Private IP" field.

    • 24

Click to expand the "Protocol Type" menu, and select "UDP."

    • 25

Type "3478" in both the "Private Port" and "Public Port" fields, and click the "Apply" button. Repeat this process for UDP ports "3479" and "3658" by creating two more rules with the names "PS3-3" and "PS3-4."

    • 26

Locate the "Virtual Server HTTP" and "Virtual Server HTTPS" rules in the "Virtual Servers List" at the bottom. These are predefined rules that came with the router. These rules are for TCP ports 80 and 443. These two ports are also used by your PS3 for the purposes of logging in to your account. However, these rules lack your PS3's static IP address. To add the IP address to these predefined rules, click the "Edit" button next to each, and type "192.168.0.101" in the "Private IP" field, then click "Apply."

    • 27

Close the D-Link AirPlus configuration page, and then restart your PS3 to ensure changes take effect. You have successfully opened up the ports the PS3 uses on your D-Link DI-524 router.
