My Refurbished PS3 Will Not Recognize the Controller

The PlayStation 3 can sync with up to seven wireless controllers at one time. The controller and console store information about each other to facilitate connecting the next time the system is turned on. If you are having trouble connecting a controller to a refurbished system, there is likely old sync information stored in the controller. Manually resyncing the controller with the PS3 should solve the problem.
  1. Connecting the Controller

    • Each time you use a controller with a new PS3 console, you must pair that controller. Turn the console on, then connect the USB cable that was included with the controller to one of the USB ports on the front of the console. The old pairing information stored in the controller will be cleared and the console will automatically pair with the connected controller.

    Assigning a Controller Number

    • Each time you turn the system and controllers on, the system will assign each controller a number. The numbers will be assigned in the order that the controllers are detected. The lights at the top of the controller will indicate which number each is.

    Using the Controller Wirelessly

    • You can remove the USB cable once the console has paired with the controller and assigned it a number. You can plug or unplug the controller's USB cable at any time, even when the console is on. If the controller turns off when you remove the cable, its battery is not charged.

    Charging

    • The console will automatically charge the controller when it is plugged in to the USB port. If the battery has less than full charge, the port it is connected to in the console will pulse with a green light. The light will stop flashing when the charge is complete.
