How to Edit PS3 JB Payloads to Work With No Drive

Sony PS3 owners who have custom firmware installed can sometimes run into disk drive problems that will not allow them to run their purchased games. The device that jailbreaks the PS3 and enables the custom firmware features can have a no-disk payload programmed into the jailbreak key. This means you do not need to have a disk inside of the PS3 when running your PS3 game backups.

Instructions

    • 1

Download the Hermes jailbreak payload and the FLIP programming software from the developer's website. Unfortunately, FLIP is the only program that can successfully program the PS3 jailbreak device.

    • 2

Hold down the "Reset" button on the jailbreak key and insert it into a USB port on your computer. Press the "Bootloader" button on the key and release the "Reset" button.

    • 3

Open FLIP and click the microchip icon and select the USB jailbreak key from the list of installed devices.

    • 4

Click the USB icon on the FLIP menu and click "USB" and "Open" to ready the jailbreak device for programming.

    • 5

Click "File" and "Load Hex File" on the FLIP menu. Click the Hermes payload hex file and click "OK." A window comes up with options deselected. Select "Erase," "Check," "Program" and "Verify."

    • 6

Click "Run" and the jailbreak device is reprogrammed using the no-disk payload. Click "Start Application" to eject the jailbreak device.
