How to Hook Up a PS3 to a Computer for a Media Player

In addition to playing media in CD, DVD and Blu-ray disc formats, the PlayStation 3 can also play digital media. You can play digital media on your PS3 from a connected media storage device or streamed from a media server on your computer. Any media player that supports the Digital Living Network Alliance standard will be recognized by the PS3. You must enable the PS3's media server capabilities in the settings menu before you can use this feature.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect your PS3 to the same Internet network as your computer. The PS3 can be connected wirelessly or wired with an Ethernet cable.

    • 2

Open the media player that you want to stream on your computer.

    • 3

Enable your media player's media streaming feature. This can usually be found in the "Settings" or "Options" menu. Refer to the user manual for your media player for instructions on how to enable this feature.

    • 4

Turn on your PS3 and scroll to the "Settings" tab.

    • 5

Select "Network Settings" and set the "Media Server Connection" option to "Enable."

    • 6

Scroll the media tab on your PS3 that corresponds with the type of file you wish to play. For example, if you want to play a video, scroll to the "Video" tab.

    • 7

Select your media player to browse available content. An icon for your media player will appear under the "Video," "Music" and "Photo" tabs on your PS3. You can access all of the corresponding files that are stored on your computer's media player.
