How to Set Up a Laptop to Stream to a PS3

Sony's PlayStation 3 entertainment console lets you do much more than play video games. The system also lets you listen to music, watch movies, view images and stream content to the device from media servers. The PS3 media server application lets you turn your laptop into a media server, so you can stream content to your PS3 in a few simple steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Open a Web browser on the computer and navigate to ps3mediaserver.org. Click the icon that represents your laptop's operating system to navigate to the download page for that operating system.

    • 2

Click the download link on the following page to download the "PS3 Media Server" install file. Double-click the install file and follow the onscreen instructions to install the application onto the laptop.

    • 3

Double-click the "PS3 Media Server" program icon to launch the program. The program will automatically try to detect any PS3 systems on the laptop's network.

    • 4

Press the power button on the front of the PS3 system. Scroll over to the section of the XrossMediaBar (XMB) that represents the type of content you want to stream to the system. For example, if you want to stream a video file, scroll over to the "Video" section of the XMB.

Scroll down to the "PS3 Media Server" option and press the "X" button to view the streamable content on your laptop's hard drive.
