How to Install Firmware on the PS3 in Recovery Mode

PlayStation 3 consoles running firmware version 2.50 and later contain a hidden recovery menu that allows you to access a variety of functions for troubleshooting problems with your console while in recovery mode. While in recovery mode, access the System Update menu to install PS3 firmware files from the Internet or from a removable storage media device such as a disc or USB memory stick. Recovery mode allows you to install firmware even if your PS3's current firmware is corrupted and your system is unbootable.

Instructions

    • 1

Download the latest firmware file from the System Software Updates page on the official PlayStation 3 website if you want to update from a removable storage media device. Create a folder named "PS3" on the memory stick or disc, create a folder named "UPDATE" inside the PS3 folder and place the downloaded "PS3UPDAT.PUP" file inside the UPDATE folder.

    • 2

Turn off your PS3 by holding down its power button if it's on.

    • 3

Press the PlayStation 3's power button and hold down the power button until you hear three beeps. Release the power button after you hear the beeps to access recovery mode.

    • 4

Use your PS3's controller to select "6. System Update" in the recovery menu, and press the "X" button on the controller.

    • 5

Insert the disc or USB memory stick into your PS3 if you're updating from a removable storage media device.

    • 6

Select "Update via Internet" and press the "X" button to automatically download and install the latest firmware version if your PS3 is connected to the Internet. Select "Update via Storage Media" to install a firmware file from a disc or USB memory stick. The PlayStation 3 automatically searches for and installs the firmware.
