Differences Amongst Slim PS3s

At the time of publication, Japan-based consumer electronics manufacturer Sony Corp. makes and sells two versions of the revised, slimmed-down version of its PlayStation 3 video game console: the PlayStation 3 160GB and the PlayStation 320GB. Known as PS3 Slim and officially branded as PS3, this iteration of the PlayStation 3 arrived on September 1, 2009, almost three years after the video game console debuted. The only technical difference between the two versions of the PS3 is the amount of storage space, which results in two varying price tags. Apart from that, though, the two PS3 Slim systems have the same features and specifications.
  1. Classification

    • The gigabyte suffixes the PlayStation 3 160GB and the PlayStation 3 320GB bear are references to the amount of storage space each PS3 Slim system's 2.5-inch Serial Advanced Technology Attachment-connected hard drive offers. Thus, the PlayStation 3 160GB offers 160 gigabytes of data storage, while the PlayStation 3 320GB doubles that amount with 320 gigabytes. This leads to a variance in price; the manufacturer's suggested retail price, at the time of publication, is $300 for the 160GB and $350 for the 320GB.

    Capabilties

    • The PS3 Slim functions as more than just a video game console, used for playing PS3 video games. It also serves as a CD, DVD and Blu-ray disc player, providing up to a progressive-scan 1,920 by 1,080 pixels in display quality using its High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) output. Two USB 2.0 connectors are included for hooking up to two game controllers. The PS3 Slim is backward-compatible with PS1 games, but not with PS2 titles.

    Connectivity

    • Apart from the aforementioned USB and HDMI ports, each 160GB and 320GB PS3 Slim has an analog audio/video output and optical digital audio output. The built-in Bluetooth 2.0 + Enhanced Data Rate wireless connectivity -- accompanying the built-in IEEE (Institute of Electronics and Electrical Engineers) 802.11 b/g wireless connectivity for Internet access -- accommodates up to seven wireless controllers. An Ethernet connection -- with an RJ-45 jack and providing up to one gigabit of data transfer speed -- provides wired networking.

    Physical Characteristics and Packaging

    • Sporting a black finish, the 160GB and 320GB PS3 Slim have a width and depth of 11.42 inches, or 290 millimeters; height of 2.56 inches, or 65 mm; and weight of 7.05 lb., or 3.2 kg. Each system is packaged with a DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller, AC power cord, A/V cable and USB cable.
