How to Hook Up a Laptop to the PS3 for File Sharing

The PlayStation 3 is a multimedia entertainment console that primarily plays video games and Blu-ray movies. The console can also connect to the Internet for content downloads and online gaming, either wirelessly through a router or a direct connection with an Ethernet cable. When connected to a local network, however, the system can search for local media servers, which can then share multimedia files with the PS3.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on the PS3 and connect to the local network. If your console does not support wireless connections, plug an Ethernet cable into a router and the back of the PS3 for a direct connection.

    • 2

Open Windows Media Player. Make sure the computer is connected to your local wireless network. Click the "Library" arrow. Select "Media Sharing."

    • 3

Click the check box labeled "Share My Media." Select the PS3 from the available devices, and click "Allow."

    • 4

Return to the PS3 menu. Select either the Photo, Music or Video tab on the XMB (Xross Media Bar), depending on what sort of content you want to share.

    • 5

Select "Search for Media Servers." Select your Windows Media Player library to establish a connection. You can now select your library from the "Media Servers" tab to access any of your available photos, videos or music files to share with the console, as long as your computer is actively connected to the network.
