How to Hook Up a PS3's Red, White and Yellow Cords

Unless you own a high-definition television, you will need to hook up your PlayStation 3 (PS3) console to your TV with standard composite audio/video cables. Unlike most devices that use these cables, however, the PS3 requires a special cable to connect to your television. The PS3 composite cable uses a single-pronged output that splits into three input connectors. This cable comes with every new PS3, so if you're setting up a newly purchased console, you should already have it at hand.

Turn off you television and console for the duration of the setup process.

    • 2

Match the colored prongs with their companion ports on the back or side of your television. Pay attention to the markings above these ports, as they signify which channel will broadcast your PS3 signal.

Insert the other end of the PS3 composite cable into the slot marked "AV Multi-Out" on the back of your PS3.

    • 4

Plug in your PS3 and turn it on.

    • 5

Turn on your TV and chance the channel to the appropriate input number. The PS3 interface -- called the XrossMediaBar (XMB) -- will appear on your screen. You can leave your settings as they are or navigate to the "Settings" menu on the XMB and open the "Video Settings" menu to make display adjustments.
