How to Go Into PS3 Recovery

The PlayStation 3 (PS3) has many ways of returning the system to factory settings and fixing issues commonly associated with firmware updates. The Recovery Mode allows you to return the PS3 to its out-of-the-box state and start from scratch if you are experiencing corrupt data issues, or if you want to put a custom firmware on the PS3. To get into Recovery Mode, a series of button presses must be conducted.

PS3 DualShock or Sixaxis controller

  Press the "Power" button on the front of the PS3 to turn it off.

  Press and hold the "Power" button, and wait for the PS3 to turn on and off by itself.

  Press and hold the "Power" button again. Release the button when the system beeps two times. Insert the supplied USB cable into either USB port on the front of the PS3, and connect a controller to the opposite side of the USB cable. When prompted press the "PS" button on the center of the controller to open the Recovery Menu.
