How to Hook Your PS3 to Your TV

Setting up video game systems with your television set used to be a simple process. You did not used to have a choice when it came to which connection interface you could use. The Sony PlayStation 3 gives you two choices when it comes to hooking it up to the TV.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare to hook your PS3 up to your TV by placing the PS3 system within three to five feet of your TV connection ports. Also make sure that there is at least one open power outlet on the wall nearby.

    • 2

Connect the power cord into the back of the PS3. Connect the other end of the power cord directly into a wall socket. The light on the front of the PS3 should be red. This means it is in standby.

    • 3

Connect the audio/video connection to the port on the back of the PS3. Here you have two decisions. If you are using a high definition TV, the HDMI cord will work best. It combines audio and video in one cord and is capable of streaming 1080p video. The component cable, better known by its red, white and yellow connections, can also be used with the PS3. The component connection on the back of the PS3 is thin and about an inch wide. The HDMI port on the PS3 is noticeably thicker.

    • 4

Connect the other end of the audio/video cable to the corresponding port on the back or side of the TV set. The component connections are color coded. The red and white are audio connections and the yellow is the audio connection. The HDMI port is the same as it looked on the PS3.

    • 5

Turn the PS3 on by pressing the "Power" button and turn on the TV. Insert the mini-USB cable into the top of the PS3 controller and the other end into the USB port on the PS3. The four lights on the controller blink.

    • 6

Unplug the PS3 controller from the PS3 and all but one light will shut off. The PS3 controller is connected using the PS3's Bluetooth connection.
