How to Fix a Broken Sensor in a PS3

Like CD or DVD players, the disc drive in the PlayStation 3 console uses an internal sensor to read discs that are inserted in its Blu-Ray drive. This sensor uses a laser to read the disc, and if this laser becomes dirty it likely won't function properly. If your PS3 isn't reading discs correctly, you can open up the unit and have a look at the sensor.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your PS3 console and unplug the cables from the rear of the unit as well as any devices from the USB ports on the front of the unit.

    • 2

Use the tip of your screwdriver to pop the rubber pad off of the screw on the left side of the console, near the top.

    • 3

Remove the screw and set it aside.

    • 4

Slide the top case of the unit to the left and lift it up to remove it. This will expose a metal housing cover.

    • 5

Remove all seven screws from the metal housing cover and remove the cover to expose the internals of the console, including the disc drive.

    • 6

Remove all screws at the corners of the disc drive assembly and lift the drive up. Unplug the SATA ribbon cable where it connects to the back of the drive. Place the drive assembly in front of you.

    • 7

Remove all screws on the top of the disc drive. Lift the top of the drive up to expose the internals of the drive, including the circular lens assembly.

    • 8

Use your microfiber cloth to wipe the lens sensor. this will clear it of any dust and debris. If the unit still doesn't read discs upon reassembly, remove the screws holding the lens assembly in place and remove the assembly. Replace it with a new lens assembly (available from a PlayStation parts retailer).
