How to Install CFW on PlayStation 3 in Recovery

Custom firmware (CFW) is software installed on electronic devices that gives users more control over their systems. Use the recovery mode option to install custom firmware onto a Sony PlayStation 3 video game system. The PS3 recovery mode gives PS3 owners a chance to recover their system by reinstalling firmware, resetting settings and even restoring the PS3 file system.

      Hold the Sony PS3 "Power" button down until the PS3 turns on and then turns off again. Release the "Power" button and hold it down again until it beeps twice. Release the button.

      Plug the PS3 controller into the PS3 with the USB cable. You cannot connect the controller using Bluetooth, because it is inaccessible through recovery mode.

      Download the PS3 CFW of your choice. Insert a USB flash drive into the computer's USB port and click the "Open folder to view files" option on the autorun window.

      Open the "PS3" folder, and copy the CFW PUP file into the "UPDATE" folder on the USB flash drive. Pull the USB flash drive out of the computer and insert it into the PS3's USB port.

      Select the "System Update" option on the PS3 recovery menu and the custom firmware file is automatically installed onto your PS3. Select "Restart System" to return to the PS3 menu.
